Few people can say they recruited themselves into Primerica but that's what Ed Ortiz did. "It was fall of 1992 and I had just left the Army as a helicopter pilot. I was in between jobs and headed to a interview in Sandy Springs (an Atlanta suburb) when I saw a Primerica office."

Ed had heard about Primerica from a friend and was curious, so he ducked inside. "I asked someone in the office what Primerica was all about and he said, 'Do you want to help people and make serious money?' I said 'Sure I do!'"

When Ed saw the Opportunity he "just flipped."  "I was so excited," Ed explains, "because I saw how I'd been treated by people who were supposed to be looking out for me, yet here I was with eight cash value policies! I knew a lot of people who had the same stuff."

The next day, Ed brought his wife Ivonne in to the office. "I wanted to see if this made sense to her. She liked it too. Both of us thought we had nothing to lose. We were scared, though. We didn't know anybody in Atlanta but we took the point of view that it couldn't be any tougher than going on deployment. No matter what happens, at least we'd have our freedom."

They started the next day. Nineteen years later, Ed and Ivonne, have a thriving business that they are building together. "Ivonne is the boss though," smiles Ed. "I'm in this business 100 percent and she gives 105 percent." The two are looking forward to the opportunities that the choppy economy has brought. "We're recruiting great people! Folks in their 20s who have long careers ahead of them. Building these people is the best investment we can make right now.
